This method, C3-R (Corneal Collagen Crosslinking with Riboflavin) is constantly evolving. Laboratory and clinical trials have shown that it strengthens the interior sructure of the cornea, stabilizing and strengthening the bonds between the fibers of the corneal collagen which are essential for the preservation of its structure.
The cornea is made up of small fibers of collagen which is a protein chain. In keratoconous the bonds between the collagen fibers are fewer and less powerful than normal, and this is the cause for the distortion in the cornea. The linking of the cornea makes it harder by 200-300% by making new bonds between the fibers using vitamin B2 and UV light of the right wavelength.
C3-R treatment is done in Eye Clinic and lasts for 60mins. During treatment drops of Riboflavin (vitamin B2) are placed on the eye and are activated using UV radiation
The international ophthalmological community believes that this riboflavin method with or without the use of endocorneal rings can significantyly decrease the progress - or even stop - the development of keratoconous, thus avoiding the ultimate solution of the corneal transplant.
