In myopia, our vision is normal at close distances and blurry when looking far away; myopia correction has been achieved for centuries with the use of concave lenses that focus the light on the retina, so that clear vision can be possible near close and in the distance. The name “myopia” comes from the Greek word “μυείν” which means “to shut the eyes” (since one of the first myopia symptoms is to squint the eyelids to be able to see slightly better). The new methods of myopia correction with the use of laser have made it a lot easier for patients, since, within just a few minutes, someone can acquire normal vision and get rid of corrective lenses.
The LASIK method is the method mostly used today to correct myopia by sculpting the cornea using laser (the initials LASIK stand for Laser Assisted in Situ Keratosmileusis). This procedure is performed today with an excimer laser used to accurately create the proper shape on the cornea, which will allow the light rays to focus normally on the retina. This myopia laser procedure lasts only a few minutes and vision is restored immediately, but a scalpel is used to create the initial flap (mechanical microkeratome).
(Why did we stop using conventional LASIK?)
Femtosecond laser is an infrared laser which is used in laser myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia e.a. surgeries; with exact precision it emits pulses that last a tiny fraction of a second (femto=10^-15 of a second) and is used in surgery instead of a mechanical microkeratome of a conventional LASIK myopia procedure. The precision offered by this myopia laser method, in combination with the comfort it provides to the patient, make it the ideal solution for the procedure.
